FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Catholic Coaching?
Catholic Coaching is about bringing awareness to your thoughts about your current circumstances. In coaching we work on what is happening now. We take a look at what your thoughts are producing in your life and how they are causing you to show up.
We do thought work to change thoughts that are not serving you or fruitful in order to rewire your brain with better self-talk and virtuous thinking. You will learn how to think new thoughts, get unstuck, feel new positive emotions, make decisions better and faster and take new actions to create the life you want!
What is required?
If you want to get the most out of coaching, you will need four things:
1. Be willing to be curious about yourself without judgment.
2. Have a student mindset willing to learn, trust and understand that there may be a better way of thinking.
3. Show up and do the work.
4. Be willing to choose your greater good.
How does coaching differ from therapy?
Mental health practitioners can diagnose and treat mental illness. Coaches do not diagnose or treat mental illness. Therapists work with patients on difficult past and present (and sometimes future) issues and life events and people who are living below a basic level of what is considered to be mentally well and able to function. Coaches help people who are mentally healthy and functional (at or above a basic level of what is considered to be mentally well) achieve greater transformation and growth.
How does coaching differ from spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction focuses on helping a person recognize how the Holy Spirt is working in their lives, developing an active prayer life, and deeper relationship with God. Coaching focuses on developing the person’s intellectual and spiritual growth while working towards an honorable, tangible goal or increase in living a virtuous life. Spiritual directors typically meet less frequently (every 6-8 weeks). Coaches may meet with clients more frequently (daily, weekly or monthly) with short-term goals, objectives and a defined end. Spiritual direction is on-going and may span the life of the director or directee. Coaching and spiritual direction can work well in convergence with each other while creating greater self-awareness and growth for the individual.
